Meet Ryan Ross,

You may recognize him from that sexually dubious band with the creepy wedding video, and yes, that is him. He has loooooong fingers (that you can appreciate in the picture,) and equally long limbs (all of them,) and his face is the prettiest face you will encounter in your life. He plays guitar and writes the most beautiful, intricate lyrics since Pete Wentz.

Now, Brendon Urie,

He is a sex god. 

He sings and dances and writes lyrics and smokes weed, all while sexually frustrating teenagers all around the world.  

Once upon a time, they were in a band together, and they were in love. 

See? That is love right there. 

Back in 2004, Brent Wilson brought Brendon Urie, who he knew from music class, to band practice so he could audition for a guitarist position for The Summer League, Brent, Spencer and Ryan’s band. Brendon did a Gollum impression that got him in the band but also managed to woo Ryan Ross, band’s lyricist and, back then, lead singer. 

Somewhere along the road, the band got a name (Panic! At The Disco,) Brendon became lead singer and Ryan used his internet-whore skills to contact Pete Wentz and get him to check out his band. Also, Brendon and Ryan fell in love. 

The first evidence of this epic love story is an entry from Ryan’s old livejournal, in which we have him being mysterious and Brendon being a dork. 

There is also a conversation between Ryan and Pete Wentz, in which Ryan calls Brendon ‘dead sexy.’

…Do I really need to elaborate? 

Ryan contacted Pete around November, 2004, and the band was signed shortly after, but Pete made it very clear that they would not be recording until they had all graduated high school. 

This is when things got hard for both Brendon and Ryan. Brendon was kicked out of his house for not wanting to follow his parents had plan for him, and he had to get a job at a Smoothie Hut to be able to pay for his own rent plus the band’s practice space. 

Around this time, Ryan’s father was going into rehab and struggling hard with his alcoholism, and Ryan stayed with his girlfriend and band mates to avoid having to be at home.

While there is no evidence of this, we knowlike to think about the late nights Ryan and Brendon probably spent at Brendon’s place, wondering about the future and comforting each other.

After Brendon graduated high school, the boys went on a road trip to Maryland to record their first album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. 

This was a very stressful time for the boys and Brendon and Ryan would argue about songs because Ryan is a control freak and had to get things done  his way. There is really no evidence on this but we like to speculate about all the angry sex they had post recoding; they had to blow the steam out somehow, right?

HERE is a video of the guys recording, and HERE is a video of Brendon from Live In Denver, where he talks about the recording process and the arguments he and Ryan used to have. 

After recording, the boys started touring and this is what we know as Brendon’s wild stage. Having been brought up by Mormons, Brendon was experiencing freedom for the first time, which resulted in him getting very drunk each night (thank you, William Beckett.) While there is no real proof of this, we imagine it must have been a difficult time for Ryan, who was raised by an alcoholic father and, at that time, did not drink a sip of alcohol. Again, this led us to speculate about some angry moments in their relationship and, of course, some angry sex as well. 

To finish up with this era, let’s go over some photographic evidence:

2006 is when shit got real. And I mean REAL.

I mean just look at them.

2006 was filled with amazing things such as stage gay, Jon Walker, the Nothing Rhymes With Circus tour and the rosevest. It also involved other not so amazing things, such as Brent Wilson suddenly leaving/being kicked out of the band. Or maybe that should count as a good thing…

So in 2006 Brent Wilson leaves the band, Jon Walker joins the band and Brendon and Ryan’s affair becomes the center of the universe. Really. 

But by the end of 2005, Ryan and Brendon started dating scene queens Jac Vanek and Audrey Kitching, respectively. They dated for about three or four months, breaking up in early 2006.

After they both broke up with their respective girlfriends, both Audrey and Jac made claims about them being gay together:

In June 06, Ryan wrote this LJ entry:

I’m the ghost in the bed.you can touch because i can’t rest. and the lights are always off so I can mold you in the dark.i can shape and pretend.”i just want to have a good time, just like everybody else, but i don’t want to fall apart.

 

Then summer started, and this is when the Ryden love really blossomed, as it seems to be a recurring thing with these two.

First, from an interview with Greta Salpeter, who was touring with Panic! at the time:

Q: Tell us about your craziest touring experience. 

On the 2006 Panic Tour, we played the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach [JUNE 24TH]. After the show, most of the bands and crew walked a mile to the beach and, having not brought our swimsuits, decided to swim in underwear or totally nude. Bob and I opted to skinny dip and, at one point, he was trying to get back to the shore but the waves were crashing over him and he was gasping for breath. I yelled to him, ‘Bob, are you going to live? As much as I want to help you, we are both naked so I can’t.’ (Would have been far too awkward). Thankfully, he survived in one glorious piece. 

The same night, or the night after, Ryan posted this on his LJ (and this is the last entry he ever posted.)

It’s our last night in Florida and let me tell you… this finally turned into a crazy rock tour… lots of shenanigans happened tonight… but I’ll save this story for the memoirs! Every night I stand on stage and tell the crowd that Brendon is a virgin… let’s just put it this way… it ain’t true!!!!

Last night we played in Myrtle Beach, NC… I’ve always wanted to go to Myrtle Beach so it was fun to finally get there and to do it in such a special way. The girls we meet at the show were amazing. They were so spirited and friendly. They were fun. 

After the show Greta and I, she’s the lead singer and from the 
The Hush Sound (the band we’re on tour with and in love with…!) well we decided we wanted to go for a midnight skinny dip in the ocean after the show and in the end more then 20 of us made the mile hike to the beach, stripped down and dove in! it was magical under the stars and moody clouds above. After about an hour splashing and riding the waves we all broke into the pool and hot tub of the condo up the beach to wash the salt away and laugh at our genius of managing to sneak so many crazies into this spa without being caught… just as the security arrived and we all scattered like geese! It was a fun night. [source]

At the end of August that year, Ryan met his girlfriend Keltie when she danced for their performance at the VMA’s. 

The Nothing Rhymes With Circus tour begun in November that year, and Ryan and Brendon reinvented the words ‘stage gay’:

2007 came around, and the boys took off to a cabin to write the ‘CABIN ALBUM’, which was later tossed and replaced by Pretty. Odd., so not much happened, as the boys secluded themselves in the cabin after they were done touring. 

For a while a lot of people thought that Ryden was dead and done with, but when Ryan and Brendon came back from the cabin, there was a new side to their relationship that wasn’t just for the cameras. 

This is a picture taken after Brendon and Ryan had dinner alone in Seattle to celebrate Ryan’s birthday, the day after the real celebration with all of their friends in NYC. I will leave the why is Ryan wearing the exact same clothes as the night before up to your imagination.

Please note how this isn’t gender specific at all. Instead of using her (or him), he very specifically uses the term “significant other”, and don’t you think if he was talking about a girl he just would’ve said that? Now, with that being said, this brings me back to ‘06 with the speculated ‘ocean sex’ and Keltie. Myrtle beach happened in the beginning of the summer (end of June) and Keltie came at the end (August).

As I’m sure you were aware, Pretty. Odd. was released in March ‘08, and there was a lot of theories that came along with it how it related to Ryden. They were cute, but all speculative, and there really wasn’t too much proof besides a few, subtle (possible) gay references [see rydenevidence if you’re curious] until I started to realize a theme throughout it, and that Summer and Ocean/Sea was also mentioned quite a few times.

Now that we got started on P.O. lyrics, Molly wrote down a few reasons on why Folkin’ Around is about Ryan, so here we go (in case you were not aware, this song was written by Brendon.)

Allow me to exaggerate a memory or two- It’s like Brendon is saying he doesn’t have as many memories with Ryan as he’d like to, so he’s kind of making them up to make himself feel better? Or he’s exaggerating the good memories to make up for the bad ones?

When summers lasted longer than we do- Maybe the good memories he’s thinking of were all from a summer (just saying, the cabin album was written in the summer), but their *fling* didn’t last the entire time

And nothing really mattered except for me to be with you- Ryan’s first priority at the cabin was to be with Brendon, and not necessarily write music, as was Brendon’s

But in time we all forgot and we all grew- But eventually they realized they had to write music if they wanted the band to keep going, and kind of put their relationship on the side

Your melody sounds as sweet as the first time it was sung- Brendon still loves singing Ryan’s older songs, because he thinks they sound just as good…

With a little bit more character for show-…even with the changes they added when they put them on the album

And by the time your father’s heard of all the wrong you’ve done- Ryan’s father died, so he won’t be hearing about Ryan’s ‘wrongs’ (maybe wrongs done to Brendon?) until the ‘afterlife’, almost implying that Ryan has until he’s dead…

Then I’m putting out the lantern find your own way back home-…to apologize/make things right with Brendon

If I’ve forgotten how to sing before I’ve sung this song- Maybe referring to the fact that Ryan called Brendon’s songs ‘little ditties’? Also possibly a reference to the fact that we know Ryan gets frustrated when Brendon can’t get the notes JUST RIGHT, and might have (at some point) told Brendon he can’t sing

I’ll write it all across the wall before my job is done- Brendon’s saying that if he can’t sing, he’s going to write lyrics to show how he feels before stopping musically?

And I’ll even have the courtesy of admitting I was wrong- Brendon saying he’ll apologize to Ryan…

You’ve never been so divine in accepting your defeat- Ryan finally giving in and stopping trying to force the cabin album to work

And I’ve never been more scared to be alone- Maybe with Ryan decided that he needed to stop their relationship to focus on writing, which scared Brendon?

If love is not enough to put my enemies to sleep- Maybe their enemies are the critics (who presumably worry Ryan), and Brendon offered his love to ‘comfort’ Ryan, but Ryan turned it down because he thought it wouldn’t help

Then I’m putting out the lantern find your own way back home- Brendon almost giving up on Ryan, telling him that if he can find his way back, then he’s welcome, but Brendon’s not going to be there to guide him.

And here’s my own go at I Have Friends In Holy Spaces 

First of all, we know that When The Day Met The Night is about Keltie. Ryan is the sun and Keltie is the moon. But then in Northern Downpour, I would say the moon is more Brendon than Keltie, or at least that Brendon interpreted that he was the moon (we will go into detail with ND later.) So here, Brendon thinks that he is the moon, and Ryan is the sun.

You remind me of a former love that I once knew - Brendon’s way of saying ‘I was in love with you’

And you carry a little piece with you - Honestly, I thought it said “peace” here, but if it is piece then it is actually better. This is Brendon saying, ‘you changed, but I still love you. you are still the old Ryan.’

We were holding hands walking through the middle of the street It’s fine with me, I’m just taking in the scenery - Brendon and Ryan used to not care about  being affectionate in public, and they had the whole stage gay thing going on, and Brendon was okay with that, he didn’t care about being obvious. 

 

You remind me of a few of my famous friends. Well, that all depends what you qualify as friends - I’m gonna take it a little too far here and say that this is about Pete. It can either be Pete’s influence on Ryan, which Brendon might not approve, or Ryan’s crush on Pete back then. 

Take a chance, take your shoes off, dance in the rain. Yeah we’re splashing around and the news spread all over town - They were being obvious. They were not being cautious about their relationship and rumors started to go around. ‘take your shoes off, dance in the rain’ is Brendon saying ‘don’t be so uptight, it doesn’t matter, they know.’

I’m not complaining that it’s raining, I’m just saying that I’d like it a lot more than you think, if the sun would come out and sing with me - The news are raining, everyone knows about them, but Brendon doesn’t care. He doesn’t care that everyone knows as long as the SUN comes out and sings with him.  All Brendon wants is Ryan to be with him, and he doesn’t care if everyone finds out about them, as long as they are singing together. 

And then we have Northern Downpour. I am not going to go into a big analysis but we do have this quote from Ryan talking about it:

“On the new album, I was really picky about Northern Downpour. It was the most meaningful song, and I wanted him (Brendon) to sound as if he wrote it. It was about touring and girlfriends and love and everything that’s been important to us in the past few years. There’s a line in the song that goes, ‘I know the world’s a broken bone, but melt your headaches, call it home.’ I told Brendon to pay special attention to that line.”

Plus the fact that post split (we will go into this later,) Brendon used to cry every. single. time. they played this song live, to the point where they stopped playing it.

whisperedlullaby also wrote this on her manifesto, and I would say it makes more than a little sense:

Keeping on the subject of Pretty. Odd., in The Making Of they say that they went back to the same practice space they went to for their headlining tour (summer headling ‘06, to be exact) and also when they first wrote Fever. Right after, Spencer says he came up with the concept for NITA in that room. It might not be anything, but it makes me wonder about the lines, “back to the street where we began, feeling as good as lovers can” and “back to the room where it all began” (okay, and basically the entire song). Plus, if it was written in the practice studio, about the practice studio, who else could it be about except for someone that was there?

2009 came with bad news after bad news.

At the beginning of the year, Ryan wrote this in weresoblogging:

“As of now I live in Brendon’s guest room on a very small and uncomfortable air mattress.”

Which leads us to think that they were still in good terms back then, but shortly after Ryan and Keltie broke up and Ryan, Jon, Brendon and Spencer somehow became RyanandJon and BrendonandSpencer. 

For a couple of months we saw tweets go back and forth between band members but nothing between Brendon and Ryan. In fact, they did not start following each other on twitter until a fan pointed it out. 

The split was announced July 6th, 2009  (as I am sure you all remember very, very well,) and after that a lot of people decided that Ryden was DEAD. I disagree.

Jon and Ryan started a new band and moved on and said nasty things about Brendon and Spencer (not going into detail there,) and the remaining of Panic! put out a new song called New Perspective.

When asked about this song, Brendon said he wrote it after he woke up from a dream (back to whisperedlullaby’s theory,)  and then the first two lines of the song go:

“I feel the salty waves come in, I feel them crash against my skin”

which brings us back to the whole Summer theme. 

Also, here Brendon says that New Perspective is about “a dude. Naked.” Believe what you want.

During those times, Brendon kept tweeting very suspicious quotes/lyrics. Here you can find them all with their respective analysis, but the one that stuck with me was this one:

Tweeted the day or the day after Ryan’s cocaine picture came out.

And this one:

Which came after a tweet about Bruno but I choose to believe that, if it had really been about Bruno, then he wouldn’t have tweeted it separately. I think it is about Ryan, feel free to agree or disagree.

Then, for Ryan’s birthday, Brendon tweeted this:

Which could be just because we all know Ryan is the biggest Beatles fanboy there is, but it could also be in reference to this, in which all I have to say is: he remembers.  

2009 Ryden pretty much ends there. 

But then in 2010, THIS HAPPENED, to make us all cry with joy:

This is what we call the Ryden Revival picture, and even if not that much happened after this, we were still in a better place than we were before, when everyone insisted that Ryan and Brendon hated each other.

Then later that year Brendon posted a picture of Bogart (or Penny Lane I can’t even remember,) and Ryan replied this

Not that it makes sense, but that is a Chemical Brothers’ song, and hey, RYDEN INTERACTION IS ALWAYS GOOD!

2011 came, and it was quite and eventful year for Panic! At The Disco.

They had their ‘come back’ show in NYC, and shortly after they released their new album, Vices & Virtues.

Someone did the whole analysis on V&V. I was gonna copy and paste it here but it is REALLY long (AND REALLY AWESOME!) and in order not to make this even longer, I am linking it HERE for everyone to check out. 

After V&V came out, it seemed like every interviewer asked about Ryan and Jon, and the answer was pretty much always the same, saying that they were still friends, still on good terms, that they still hung out, etc. BUT, a couple of times, Brendon said I ACTUALLY MET WITH RYAN FOR DINNER LAST WEEK or RYAN AND I WENT FOR LUNCH A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO. Always Ryan. Always Brendon. It could be because they live pretty close (17 miles, thanks google maps,) but I say they went on dates. Sue me.

I am not going to talk about the new stage gay going on with Ian and Dallon because we all know about it, but it seems like this year Brendon is really, REALLY, really exploding homosexuality on stage.

Brendon’s completing his senior year of high school, trying to make it past the first anniversary of his sister’s death and one day become a hairdresser. Ryan’s a boy at the park with stunning eyes and hyperactive dog, that walks into Brendon’s life without realizing. It’s a story about love and moving on.

Brendon’s sister commits suicide, and he meets Ryan at a bus stop and they go to Boston together.

Here, then, is a story about a high school wherein Brendon and Ryan hate each other.

Stepbrother AU. “Personally, I don’t care,” are the first words to drip from her mouth. Then, “She deserved it. Stupid slut slept with everyone around her, and a gay boy got her pregnant.” Ryan slips his eyes shut and thinks of her skin glistening under the florescent lights of the bathroom. She’s all china-doll and cold. He smiles to himself. She downed alcohol and pills; copy cat, he thinks, almost venomously. But then again, he stopped feeling pity a long time ago. 

Flowers by panic_smile 
Brendon’s learning that the world is made up of many things, including evil. He also learns that that evil is usually attracted to good people. This is probably the saddest fic you will ever read (it gets me bawling every time), but it is so, so, so amazing, I cant even count how many times I’ve read this.

Peengate ‘07 by pluginxbaby 
Somehow, pictures of Ryan’s peen got leaked on the internet, and he’s bound and determined to find out who the hell did it. Hilarious. 

Rose is a Four-lettered Word by sunday_porch 
Ryan’s allergic to roses. Well, maybe “allergic” is the wrong word for it.
